JULIA SORBORO
MY WORK SERVES AS A PERSONAL EXAMINATION OF THE UNCONTROLLABLE AND UNPREDICTABLE NATURE OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE. USING HAND-DRAWN SHAPES, MARKS, AND COLORS, COMBINED WITH MY OWN WRITING AND JOURNALING, MY WORK ACTS AS A CATHARTIC EXPRESSION OF MY IDENTITY.
WHETHER I AM WORKING IN COLLAGE, DRAWING, OR PRINTMAKING, I USE THE PROCESS OF MAKING AS A MEDITATIVE TOOL. THESE MEDIUMS HELP ME TO MANIFEST FEELINGS OF AUTONOMY AND POWER THAT ARE MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, LOST TO ME, AND BURIED BENEATH FEELINGS OF DOUBT AND UNCERTAINTY. THE SONIC TEXTURES CREATED IN MUSIC ARE EXTREMELY INFLUENTIAL TO MY WORK, ALMOST SYNESTHETICALLY. I APPROACH A NEW WORK AS IF IT WERE A SONG; BUILDING UP VARIOUS MOTIFS AND REPETITIONS TO CREATE AN OVERALL STORY. I USE TEXT TO EXPRESS MY NEUROTIC AND REPETITIVE THOUGHT PATTERNS; AN ATTEMPT TO ANALYZE AND RELEASE THEM.
I FIND THAT MY FAVORITE ART IS THE WORK THAT MAKES ME FEEL CONNECTED TO THE SHARED HUMAN EXPERIENCE , AND REMINDS ME THAT I AM NEVER ALONE OR ABNORMAL IN MY FEELINGS. MY WISH FOR MY WORK IS TO TAP INTO THE UNIVERSALITY OF EMOTIONS; TO CONNECT WITH, AND SPARK VULNERABILITY IN MY AUDIENCE.
SCOTT PICKERING
Vibrant paintings, random sketches and doodles by renowned Cleveland artist and vet musician Scott Pickering, known for his whimsical, active style of drawing.
His thickly applied paint, rapidly rendered subjects, and scrawled linear characters float loosely across the pictorial field, as though hallucinatory.
Pickering’s personal iconography is stripped-down and spaced-out. His art represents his perceptions of the outside world distilled down to their essence and projected outward through his prolific creative acts.
This is your chance to take home some local flavor and get sproinky!
